How It Began

The Bowery District is so much more than just a place to live. It’s also home to some of Akron’s newest cultural, dining and work opportunities.

In 2018, leading developers and city visionaries invested nearly $42 million in restoring and rehabilitating six historic downtown Akron buildings into what is now The Bowery District neighborhood: 92 luxury apartments, 36,000 square feet of retail space and 4,000 square feet of office space. The Akron Savings & Loan Building, located at the corner of South Main Street and Bowery Street, serves as the cornerstone of the development.

History Rewritten

When the project began, the team’s goal was simple: to help finally build out the area known as Akron’s South Main Street. However, a larger goal also took shape: preserve and celebrate downtown Akron’s past.

With these goals in mind, the buildings have all been adapted for modern usage while keeping historic details in place. Today, each apartment within The Bowery District offers luxury and modern amenities at every turn. You’ll find finishes like quartz countertops and porcelain tiles — all showcased alongside large historical windows that give views of the revitalized city below.
